It’s Retro Week here at World Soccer Shop! We’re celebrating by featuring a handful of the throw-back kits available in our shop. Spanning the past century and the entire globe, these retro jerseys carry plenty of memories and an equal amount of old-school swag!
If you haven’t seen “Escape to Victory,” (you need to go watch it immediately after reading this post) it’s the story of Allied prisoners in a German war camp during WWII who rally together to play a German side in one soccer match. The exhibition is set up as a propaganda stunt for the Germans, but despite malicious fouls and blatantly biased officiating, the POWs give their German opposition all they want.
Michael Caine captains the Allied prisoners team, and yes, you do see Sylvester Stallone and Pelé in that screen-grab down there. In one of the film’s best scenes, Pelé delivers probably one of the best lines in silver screen history. Caine coaches tactics on a chalk board to his team, and Pelé gets up and takes the chalk out of his hand and says, “Give me the ball here, and I do this, this, this, this, this, this, this, goal! Easy!” while drawing a dizzying run across the board.
“Victory,” as the film is known in North America, combines great actors with professional players to stage a fantastic cast that shines in one of the most inspiring films made! Few can argue against it being the best soccer-centric film ever made, and while the classic, three-stripe jersey is fictitious, there are few kits more iconic than this one!Bottom photo courtesy of The Guardian.
